P: grade of C or better in C506 or equivalent proficiency, or permission of
the instructor.

The objective of this course is to further develop the student's facility in
reading and translating literary Chinese (wen-yen).  Readings will be taken
from literary texts of various periods up to and including the
modern period.  Students will learn the basic syntactic structures of the
language and the various functions of common particles.

The course stresses knowledge of grammar, reading vocabulary, and accurate
translation from wen-yen into English.  Grading will be based on class
attendance and performance, the timely completion of assignments, interim
quizzes, and as a final examination.
