COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTIONS.
Kinds, conventions, and elements of poetry in a selection of poems
from several historical
periods.
FOR SWORD SECTION 1925:
We will begin this course by posing the obvious question -- What is
poetry? -- before moving
on to consider an even more difficult one: Why? Why do poets choose
to express ideas in
complex rather than in simple language? Why and to what effect do
they employ rhyme and
meter, simile and metaphor? And why should we, as readers, expend the
energy required to
unravel, interpret, and savor such a "difficult" mode of
discourse?
Using poems from a range of historical periods as well as works by several contemporary poets, we will address these questions by exploring poetry's typical themes, forms, techniques, and aspirations. Because this is an intensive writing course, our emphasis will be not only on reading but also and especially on writing lucidly, analytically, and imaginatively about poetry. Assignments will include weekly short responses, at least one longer formal essay, and a final creative project. Active participation in class discussions will be both encouraged and required.
