TOPIC: MODERN/POSTMODERN
We will read a number of works that define "modernity" and "postmodernity" in a variety of ways--for instance, chapters from David Harvey's The Condition of Postmodernity. We will also read a variety of modernist and postmodernist literary works--Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, perhaps, and Don DeLillo's White Noise, for comparative purposes. And we will explore the differences between "modern" and "postmodern" through visual materials--films, paintings, architecture--and perhaps also music.
You will be
required to write a series of brief "response papers"--2 or 3 pages
each--and a longer,
final paper. You will also lead at least one of our Thursday
discussions, and give an oral
report on your final paper.
