Open only to M.A. candidates who have been recommended by the Director of Graduate Studies and to Ph.D. candidates, who, for one reason or another, will not have had teaching experience by the end of their work. L503 is a practice-teaching course: a student is accepted by a faculty member who is teaching a 300-level course as a kind of intern, giving a lecture or two, grading some papers, seeing some students, etc. The student must have had some graduate work in the area of the 300-level course in which he or she wishes to practice-teach. M.A. students should take the course in their second or third semester of study. Once a student has been accepted by a faculty member with whom he/she will work, the student must report the fact to Mr. Williams so that proper records may be kept. The course is not open to students in other departments.
