This course is a workshop in writing poetry. Students will turn in
approximately one poem a
week, usually an exercise poem based on the reading, which will be
discussed in class. Each
workshop will begin with the discussion of a model poem from one of
the required books, and
each student may be asked to do a presentation on a topic related to
contemporary poetry or
poetic form. No tests or exams. No auditors. Students must make
photocopies of their
poems for everyone in the class.
Text: Five books of contemporary poetry, most likely including
Middle Kingdom by
Adrienne Su, Post-Meridian by Mary Ruefle, Medicine by
Amy Gerstler, Soul
Train by Allison Joseph, and Liver by Charles Webb.
To apply to this class, place five poems, your e-mail address, and a list of creative writing classes you’ve taken (and names of instructors) into my mailbox in BH402 at least one week before your registration day. Submit your manuscript as soon as possible, as places will be filled as people apply—if you have a late registration date, apply at the beginning of the period to reserve a space. No places will be saved for late registration. I will email those admitted to the class. After you have been approved, contact the Undergraduate Secretary in BH442 for an on-line authorization.
