Meets with CMCL C627. The attempt to understand basic categories of female
and male as constructed in society often fails to capture the actual
experience of women and men, especially women. Shifting to a performance
perspective permits us to focus on gendered experience and the communication
and interpretation of that experience in familiar forms.

The course will consider specific forms of performance in several cultures
(including ones in Africa, India, and North America) and the contexts within
which they occur, specifically the sociopolitical and ideological systems
that attempt to define gender roles. The primary focus will be on the
performance of women in everyday life situations, as well as more formally
organized events, and the communication that takes place within the
performance event.
