Description and Objectives.  This course is intended to help students
formulate a Ph.D. thesis proposal and prepare for the Ph.D. qualifying
examinations.

The instructor serves as facilitator for the group.  Each student will also
involve other faculty members particularly qualified to comment on his/her
proposal during its preparation and presentation to the seminar.  Topics to
be discussed in preparation for the exam will be chosen primarily by the
students at the first and second class meetings.

Grades.  Evaluation of performance in the course will be based on class
participation and discussion (33%), timely completion of individual
assignments (33%), and the final proposal for the Ph.D. thesis (33%).

Required Reference Text.  The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.
