French And Italian | Masterpieces of Italian Literature 2

The focus of this course is on the 19th and 20th century.  Its goal is to
read some of Modern Italy's most representative works, to understand them
in their diverse historical contexts, and to develop a critical approach to
literary texts.  Special attention will be paid to such topics as Romanticism,
Verism, the symbolist movement and its legacy, the avant-guards, war and
literature, Fascism and literature, and contemporary literature.  Students
will write short essays during the term, participate in an oral presentation,
and write a final paper.  The class will be conducted in Italian.

Required texts: I. Calvino, Il barone rampante.  All other texts will
be available in the reader.
