G363 Deutsche Kulturgeschichte (3 cr.)
Michel Chaouli
Prerequisite: G300 with a minimum grade of C-. Recommended: G330. In
our study of German cultural history, we will focus on the idea of the
nation. Precisely because it has been, more often than not, an idea
rather than a reality, the "nation:" has had a profound influence on
many features of German cultural life. We will explore how Heimat,
Volk, Kulturnation, the position of the "non-German," the German
language, as well as German literature and art have been refracted
through the lens of nation and nationalism.
