B362 will cover the major social, political, economic, and
military-diplomatic developments in Europe from ca. 1930 to the
present. A major focus of the course will be World War II, its
origins, immediate effects, and consequences. Some of the specific
topics that will be dealt with are: the Great Depression of the 1930's
and its social and political consequences, international communism,
fascism, the emergence of the Soviet and National Socialist
totalitarian regimes in Russia and Germany, World War II and the
Holocaust, postwar European recovery and the development of the common
market, European politics from the 1960's to 1990, and the Cold War
and its end in Europe. There will be two mid-term examinations and a
final.
