This course examines the genesis, evolution and collapse of the Soviet
regime.  Covers both the major events in Soviet history and the
experiences of individuals.  The basic text is Geoffrey Hosking, The
First Socialist Society, and the readings include John Scott, Behind
the Urals, a story by an American who lived in the Soviet Union in the
1930s; Evgeniya Ginzburg, Within the Whirlwind, a memoir by a Soviet
woman about her life in Stalin's labor camp; and The Portable
Twentieth-Century Russian Reader, a collection of short stories.
Requirements (still tentative) include one short essay, a mid-term,
and a final exam.
