This course will introduce students to major issues in the social,
economic, and political history of the United States between European
settlement and the Civil War. It will also serve as an introduction
to the craft of history, highlighting the use of sources from the
period under study and the debates among historians that continue to
shape our understanding of the past. In addition to lectures twice
weekly, students will be required to read material from a textbook, a
collection of essays with historical documents, and two memoirs.
Student assignments include a midterm and final in-class exam, one
short paper based on assigned reading, and the completion of several
brief in-class assignments. Assigned readings for the course will
come from the following texts: Jemison, A Narrative of the Life of
Mrs. Mary Jemison; Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass; Binder and Reimers, The Way We Lived (vol. I); and Brinkley,
Unfinished Nation (vol. I).
