Above section carries culture studies credit
Lecture and discussion of the history of the plague, primarily in
Europe from the Black Death of 1348 to the last great plague of
Marseilles in 1720. But this course will also follow the European
tradition of plague history into the 20th century. We will examine
literary, artistic, public health, medical, religious, behavioral and
social responses to bubonic plague. In the process this course will
introduce students to a broad span of European and world history,
viewed through the macabre and fascinating lens that the great plagues
provide. No prerequisites. It is assumed that students have not had
other courses in European history.
