This course explores the cultural and political history of East Asia,
in particular of China, Korea, and Japan, from the beginnings to about
1700 A.D. Special topics include early Chinese thought, the
development of the imperial state, court life, and popular culture in
East Asia. Textbook readings are accompanied by paperbacks dealing
with the basis of the East Asian intellectual tradition; the
confessions of a Japanese court lady; and a choice of readings on high
living or low life in Imperial China. Course requirements are two
tests and a final.
