Topic: Gender in Latin American History
A portion of the above section reserved for majors
This course seeks to familiarize students with key historiographical
debates on gender in Latin America from colonial times to the
twentieth century. The aims of the course are two-fold: 1) to analyze
selected, key works on gender produced over the last thirty years; and
2) to understand the story behind the story, that is, the academic,
political, and social context in which these texts were produced.
Particular emphasis will be given to theoretical and methodological
issues. All students will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of
their class preparation and discussion, and on their written
assignments. Every week students will submit a two-page paper
examining the main arguments of the required reading(s) for that week.
The students can choose a research proposal, a course syllabus or a
term paper as their final project.
