H730 | 2763 | Peterson
4:00-6:00P T LH019
Topic: Body, Gender, Culture in Modern Britain
A portion of the above section reserved for majors
Gender, the body, and culture will be the themes (singly or in
combination) that students will be reading about and researching. In
the process, students will develop their knowledge of the Victorian
period, the primary sources for the study of the era, and the research
tools that can lead the researcher efficiently to those sources. Some
useful theoretical literature will also be included.
The final product of the seminar will be an article-length research
paper on a subject of the student's choice. The work will be done in
stages:
1.Introduction to the sources for Victorian social and cultural
history;
2.Selection of research topic, together with relevant methods and
theory;
3.Researching, organizing, and writing the paper;
4.Oral presentations of finding and class critique.
Students from all fields of history and from other disciplines are
welcome.
