Topic: Colonial Africa

The primary sources on colonial Africa are particularly rich for the
reconstruction of a range of social relationships and cultural
perceptions.  This class will give students an opportunity to research
and write a paper that relates to individual interests: perhaps to
explore a potential dissertation topic or to use comparative source
material.  The first three weeks or so will be given over to readings
on some broad historiographical issues but the main project for the
semester will be researching and writing a paper.
