This seminar will combine intensive reading and writing with weekly
discussion. The subject matter will be drawn from the diverse
experience of Americans in non-military affairs during World War Two.
We will consider, for example, the roles of women in factory
production, the use of propaganda in Hollywood films and elsewhere,
the quest of African-Americans for equal opportunity, and the growing
power of federal government during wartime. Among the larger
questions to be studied is the degree to which Home Front experiences
represented temporary or more permanent changes in American life. We
will look too at how the US experiences compares to that of other
nations at war, particularly Great Britain and Japan. The major
writing will be out-of-class essays and one long research paper. The
class meets the intensive writing requirement.
