This course has two foci: the experiences of those designated "mad"
or "bad" in the 19th and 20th century U.S. and the changing responses
of the state to them. We will read both first-hand accounts, e.g.,
William Hotchkiss, Five Months in the New York State Lunatic Asylum,
and historical overviews. Students will be expected to write 5 short
responses to class readings, as well as a 10-12 page research paper.
