History And Philosophy Of Science | History of Technology: Technology and Western Civilization
X220 | 8700 | Richard Sorrenson

We live in a society dominated by technological change, but that has
not always been the case. We will try to consider the following
questions: Is technological change more important in American than
anywhere else? Is technology gendered and who should do the
housework? Is western technology fundamentally different from that of
other cultures? Was it inevitable that technology developed the way
it did in the west? What do science and technology have to do with
each other? Since this is an intensive writing class, careful
attention will be given to writing short papers which will be due
roughly once a week. I will usually lecture on Tuesday, and devote
Thursday to discussing the reading and your papers with you.
