L600: Advanced Phonological Description
Instructor: Stuart Davis
MW: 2L30 - 3:45
SE 009
Section 2868

Prerequisite: L542

This course introduces the basic principles and workings of Optimality
Theory largely (but not exclusively) focussing on the syllable. We
will first cover syllable theory and moraic phonology in some detail.
We will then examine a variety of optimality-theoretic topics
considering the possible insights they offer into phonology. Readings
will be drawn from the current literature to illustrate theoretical
constructs and argumentation. There will be a term paper as well as
one or more homework assignments in the first part of the semester.
Students may also be asked to do one or more article presentations as
well as a presentation of the term paper.
