M312 covers differential calculus of vector -valued functions, transformation of coordinates, change of variables in multiple integrals. Vector integral calculus: line integrals, Green's theorem, surface integrals, Stokes' theorem. Applications. This course is required for all BS degrees in mathematics. and is optional for the BA and the mathematics minor. The prerequisite is M311 or S311 or consent of the instructor.
The text is Vector Calculus by Jerrold Marsden and Anthony Tromba. A Student Study Guide is also available and recommended. Material covered in M312 is particularly relevant for physics and applied mathematics. Some assignments will involve use of the computer algebra system Maple. Previous knowledge of Maple is not essential.
Grades will be based on two midterm exams, a final exam, quizzes, and homework.
