MATHEMATICS FOR INDUSTRY

TR 9:30 - 10:45, SPRING 2001, SE 245

INSTRUCTOR D. MAKI, RH 106

In spring 2001, the mathematics department will be offering a course which will emphasize topics from mathematics and statistics which are especially useful for decision making in business, industry, and government. The focus of the course activities will be student teams working on projects from companies and governmental units which are close (<60 miles) to Bloomington. Class lectures and activities will be chosen to help the teams complete the projects they have been assigned. Some of the topics which are likely to be covered are forecasting, quality control, linear optimization, inventory control, and simulation. Students will be expected to make oral and written presentations on the team projects, and they will be expected to work in teams to learn some of the course material.

There are two course options to use to sign up for this course. First, as M448, Mathematical Models and Applications (the section number is 3066), or second as Y398, Internship in Professional Practice (the section number is 3056). Enrollment will be limited so that the teams will be of size 3 or 4.

If you are interested in obtaining more information about this course, please contact Professor Maki, either by email at maki@indiana.edu or by phone at 855-2200.
