R336 Religion in Modern America (3 cr) TR 9:30-10:45 BH005 (Stein)
This class deals with the development of religious life, thought, and
practice in modern America. It provides an opportunity to examine the
religious history of our nation since the time of the Civil War as
well as the contemporary religious situation. We will examine
together a wide range of topics from the changing fortunes of
immigrant religious communities, the rise of Fundamentalism, the
radicalization of religious thought in the 1960s, the impact of New
Religious Movements, and the interaction of religion and politics.
Special attention will be given to the expansion of religious
pluralism in the United States and the diverse views of religious
groups on such topics as secularization, modern science, race, family,
and the nation. Evaluation is based on three unit exams and three
short written assignments.
