This course examines some classical texts of the Christian mystical
tradition. We will spend some time on background and themes (the
Hellenistic worlds, monasticism, asceticism, love for God,
transformation), but will use most of our energy delving into texts
(in translation, though those taking the class as R713 should be able
to work in some primary text language for their papers). We will
probably read deeply into one person in each of several periods: Early
Christianity, Medieval - Bernard or Bonaventure & marguerite Porete,
English 14th century - Julian and perhaps the Cloud of Unknowing,
Rhineland (Eckhart is the obvious choice, Early Modern - Teresa of
Avila and John of the Cross. Seminar means lively participation.
Each week one or two students will be responsible for leading
questions and supplementary insights. Requirements: Seminar paper
plus participation in class. Tentative syllabus will be available by
early November in SY 213. Meets with R713.
