Prerequisite: THTR T120; at least Sophomore standing.

THIS SECTION OPEN TO COAS THEATRE MAJORS AND THEATRE GRAD STUDENTS ONLY. ALL OTHER THEATRE MAJORS MUST OBTAIN ONLINE AUTHORIZATION FROM T230.

MAY BE TAKEN FOR GRADUATE CREDIT.

This course is to liberate the natural speaking voice of the actor, and to introduce basic speech for the stage. The first half of the semester is spent on isolating areas of tension in the actor's physical and vocal apparatus that keep her/him from using their voice freely. Through specific exercises in alignment, breathing, loosening, and opening up the channel for sound, via the jaw, tongue and soft palate, the actor acquires tools to begin alleviating his/her unique tensions that block sound. The second half of the semester focuses on building power and range by developing breath muscles of the ribs and diaphragm, limbering the resonators of the chest, mouth, teeth, sinus, nasal and skull, and finally, work on the entire range of the voice. Throughout the course the work is applied to text. The student works through spoken text through his/her own creative writing, haikus, sonnets, and monologues, which are all rehearsed and performed. The work is influenced by Kristin Linklater and Patsy Rodenburg, primarily.

ASSIGNMENTS: 1 or 2 short papers.
EXAMS: Mid-semester quiz (essay) and Final.
OTHER: Final Haiku, Sonnet, and Monologue.
