This course will examine anthropological and historical approaches to social
memory. It will focus particularly on the politics of memory with special
attention to how monuments, civic celebrations, heritage sites, public art
forms, and historical theme parks become the sites of contestation over the
meaning of history and identity.
The course is organized as a seminar. Requirements: (1) for undergraduate
students: a mid-term, a final, and a short research paper; (2) for graduate
students: one oral presentation and two research papers.
