COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR NATIONALISM AND CULTURAL IDENTITY:  STOELTJE



Cultural Nationalisms and Nation-States alike utilize resources
selected from symbolic forms (the indigenous repertoires of specific
cultural groups, novels and films, language, sites and monuments,
etc.) in order to build solidarity and unity.  Available to cultural
groups expressing resistance or the forces of domination or efforts
toward negotiation, narrative, song, ritual, and other forms in all
media are available for motivation.  The course deals with the
processes and the texts or performances that embody these efforts in
an effort to understand the cultural and social elements in the
political.



Papers and Presentations:  Students may choose any nationalism as
their subject and write two related papers on the process of
nationalism.  The latter portion of the class will be devoted to
student presentations of their research.  Readings will include
theories of nationalism and international examples.
