We shall read 10 to 12 of Shakespeare's major plays, covering the playwright's whole career. Two lectures and one discussion section each week. Since there will be a great deal of emphasis on the continuity between plays and upon the way Shakespeare continually reworks earlier structures and rethinks earlier ideas, regular attendance at lectures and discussions will be particularly important, in fact, necessary. Two hour examinations, two essays, brief weekly in-class writing exercises (i.e., quizzes), and a comprehensive final examination. Students will be expected to remember at the end of the course plays they read at the beginning and thus should probably plan on reading many of the plays twice. Text will be the second edition of The Riverside Shakespeare . The IU Theatre and Drama Department will be putting on Much Ado about Nothing in early February and the class as a whole will read that play, see the production, and write upon it.
