We will read and discuss approximately ten great novels, starting with Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey and ending with H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine. Others may include Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist or Great Expectations, George Eliot’s Middlemarch, and Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. You will be asked to write a series of brief response papers (1-2 pages) and one longer paper (6-10 pages). There will also be a midterm and final exam. If the class is small enough, you may also be asked to give a brief report on your final paper. Final grades will be based on the papers (50%), the two exams (20% each), and attendance and participation (10%).
