TOPIC: THE NOVELS OF JANE AUSTEN AND WALTER SCOTT

This course will study the works of the two most influential novelists of the 19th c. : Jane Austen and Walter Scott. Austen perfected the novel of manners and taught generations how to turn everyday life into a realm of acute criticism, but also great affection. In his historical romances, Scott taught his world how to rethink History, and the place of the individual within a changing world. We will read several novels by each author and compare their views on nation, history, home, gender and emotion. We will also watch a couple of recent films based on these novels, and attend “Lucia di Lammermoor,” the opera version of Scott’s The Bride of Lammermoor. Assignments for the class will include several analytical papers and a research paper.
