The goal of this ten-week class is to provide students with
instruction in and opportunities to practice the kinds of critical
reading strategies that they can apply in their subsequent course
work.  These strategies will encourage students to appreciate and take
advantage of the connection between academic reading and writing
skills and will include prereading, reading, and rereading strategies
to foster students' comprehension of a given text as well as
strategies that will enable them to adopt a critical perspective.
