Topics in Modern Art
This course will survey the images produced in Britain, ca 1768-1915. In
addition to the major art movements, artists, exhibition spaces, and
artistic groups associated with "high art" such as the Pre-Raphaelites,
and the "Olympians," we will also consider other products of visual
culture such as popular illustration, and photography. In examining
Victorian art, we will also examine the ways images reflect and shape a
variety of key socio-cultural issues including: gender roles, imperialism,
class, race, and nationalism. Class sessions will be part lecture, and
part discussion. Undergraduate requirements will include, tests, quizzes,
and short research projects, with assigned readings from a central text,
with additional readings from a course pack. Graduate requirements will
include a research paper, additional readings, and an additional hour of
discussion per week, to be determined later.
