Folklore | Introduction to World Music and Culture
F111 | 2242 | Staff

People throughout the world perform and listen to music as a form of
entertainment. But music is also serious business – political,
social, religious, artistic and economic. This course introduces
students to ethnomusicology and the cross-cultural study of music as
culture. It explores performance and ideas – familiar and not so
familiar – from around the world. The course analyzes music events in
human life in a variety of social, political, and personal contexts.
Topics include such subjects as

popular music, music and social change, music and ritual, music and
national politics, and music as communication and self-expression.
F111 is an introductory course appropriate for non-majors as well as
for students considering a major or minor in
Folklore/Ethnomusicology. Formal music training is NOT required.
Fulfills a COAS Arts and Humanities,

Traditions and Ideas distribution requirement.
