Folklore | Readings in Ethnography
F525 | 2269 | Schrempp
This course is a historical survey of main styles of ethnographic
research and writing, with emphasis on three types of theoretical
considerations. First, we will consider the relationship between
ethnographic research and the changing academic, political, cultural,
and artistic contexts in which it is situated. Secondly, we will
consider ethnographers as individuals whose specific backgrounds and
aspirations influence their work. Thirdly, we will pay close
attention to the methods employed by specific ethnographers, with an
eye toward determining the strengths, limitations and presentday
usefulness of each. Reading load will be heavy; main requirements are
two papers and a presentation.
