French and Italian | Reading and Expression in French
F300 | 2334 | Prof. Eric MacPhail
F300 is an introductory course to French literature and culture. We
will read poems, short stories, a novel and a play, take tests, do
classroom presentations and write papers on the reading assignments.
We will begin with a few lessons on how to read French poetry and then
read poems for two to three weeks. At the end of this period, each
student will choose a poem from the anthology on which to do a
classroom presentation and later write a brief essay which will be
corrected and rewritten. Then we will read a play and take a test on
the play. Next we will read short stories from the old anthology
Contes et nouvelles, and again each student will choose one
story on which to do a classroom presentation (5 to 10 minutes) and
write a composition (3 to 4 pages). Finally, we will read André Gide's
novel La symphonie pastorale, which will be the subject of our
final exam. We might see a movie at the end of the semester.
