Intro to German Literary Themes: Eine Jugend in Deutschland (3 cr.)

Course Title (CoAS Bulletin) : Introduction to German Literature:
Themes. Study of a single literary theme (such as music,
generational conflict, love, revolution) as represented in two or
more periods.

Prerequisite: G330
The theme for the course is taken from one of the readings: Eine
Jugend in Deutschland by Ernst Toller. We will read this and other
texts that depict youth and adolescence in German speaking countries,
keeping in mind the historical and social events that affect our
heroes and heroines. The readings will be assigned in such a way
that we will move chronologically backwards as the semester
progresses from the end of the 20th century to the end of the 18th.
The course will be conducted in German, with all assignments written
in German, but with the understanding that students need guidance in
developing proficiency in all skills.

Required Texts:
Hermann Hesse, Unterm Rad, Suhrkamp (paperback edition)
Gottfried Keller, Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe, Reclam (paperback)
Ernst Toller, Eine Jugend in Deutschland, Rowohlt (paperback)
Joseph von Eichendorff, Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts. dtv
(paperback)
Additional shorter readings will be assembled in a course package
available at Collegiate Copies.
