Gender Studies | Women and Development
G302 | 8909 | Professor Gracia Clark

The vast majority of the world's people are poor and live in
low-income nations. Women and Development focuses on the work of women
in households, agriculture, the informal sector, and the formal labor
force as affected by multilateral trade, development, and finance
institutions. The term "Third World" is used here to refer to the
movement against political and economic alignment with the capitalist
"First World" and socialist "Second World"--a movement that reached
its peak in the 1960s and '70s. The course may also explore a few
examples of women's organizing efforts in response to forces that
impoverish them.
