A portion of the above section reserved for majors

C380 is a history of ancient medicine, from its beginnings in
Mesopotamia to Galen in the 2nd century A.D. and including ancient
Chinese and Indian medicine. The approach of the course is to
understand medicine within its cultural context rather than to judge
it in terms of modern biomedicine---to investigate different
conceptions of illness and healing and how the various ancient
cultures constructed illnesses. No previous knowledge of ancient
history or medicine is exposed. Three paperbacks, course packet.
Two midterms and a final.
