A portion of the above section reserved for majors

This course is a research seminar for graduate students in the modern
history of Russia and the Soviet Union. Advanced students in Russian
history will be required to work primarily with Russian language
sources; students in other fields can use the language appropriate to
their specialty. The course will include initial meetings dealing
with questions of methodology and approach (using Richard Evans, “In
Defense of History: Norton, 2000”) as well as other short common
readings. In accordance with field committee practices, I will allow
students to conduct research in areas in which another Russian
history faculty member has more expertise than I, and for that
faculty member to be a reader of the seminar paper.
