The social problems in our society effect ethnic and other minorities
at a disproportionate rate. Hence, the public at large believe that
ethnic and other minorities are responsible for the vast number of
social problems in our society. This misinformation is disseminated
through various institutions in our society. For example, because the
American media has painted poverty "with a black face" and it has
depicted "the welfare queen" as an African American female and the
media has also depicted criminals as African Americans, the public
come to believe that social problems are indigenous only to the
African American community.

We then need to understand why such events happen, how they touch and
shape all of our lives, regardless of our ethnic background, and what
we can do about them.
