History and Philosophy Of Science | History of Western Science since 1750
X407 | 2823 | James Capshew

This course is an introduction and survey of the history of Western
science since 1750. Designed to sample the rich secondary literature,
the course will consider the physical, biological, and social
sciences.

Each week class participants will take up a book or other reading for
critical analysis. After brief remarks by the instructor,
participants will discuss the book's aims, methodology, and content,
with the further objective of placing the work in a coherent
historiographical context.

Each student will be required to prepare a one-page synopsis on each
reading, leading the class discussion a few times during the semester,
and take a final essay examination. Grades will be determined on the
basis of quality of written class work (1/3), on participation in
discussion (1/3), and on final exam performance (1/3).
