This course will be divided into two parts.  In the first part
of the course we will explore metrical stress theory in some
detail using.  In the second part we will introduce the basic
principles and workings of Optimality Theory  We will examine a
variety of optimality-theoretic topics considering the possible
insights they offer into phonology. Readings will be drawn from the
current literature to illustrate theoretical constructs and
argumentation.  There will be a term paper, a short paper for the
first part of the course, and one or more homework assignments.
Students may also be asked to do one or more presentations in addition
to the presentation of the term paper.
