Music | Sociology of Music

This seminar explores the relationships between music and society and
is an ideal music or music educational elective for doctoral and
master's students in music and music education.  There are no course
pre-requisites.  Among the topics to be discussed are:  the social
roots of musical meaning, paradigms of the sociology of music, music
and institutions, social processes, social roles and stratification in
music, gender issues, media and mass musical culture, musical taste,
and musical socialization.  The projects for the course are as
follows:  assigned readings supplemented by short synthesis papers,
