This course is a global classroom. Students and faculty at Humboldt
University (Berlin), IUB, and IUPUI will read a common body of
materials and converse on closed circuit television on the uses and
abuses of citizenship and civil society in America and Germany. Among
other topics, we shall consider the founding ideals of both
countries, the comparative responses in both to global totalitarian
movements, interchanges during the Cold War between Humboldt, Free
University, and Indiana University, and current controversies in both
countries over immigration and citizenship.
