H490 From Utopia to E-topia, or Can we save the city as we know it
through micro-level design? (2 cr.); 2nd 8 weeks; T/R; 6-7:30 p.m.;
BH 305
The course will concentrate on the understanding of modern
urban design and how it is being re-thought today in light of
dramatic changes in our cities and our lifestyles. You, as a
citizen or a designer, can make informed decisions that have an
impact on the struggle to reinvent, redevelop and support Main
Street America. Through this study, we will try to determine how
successful the ideals of today are and where they fall short. We
will begin to understand how decisions made on the micro-level in
historic neighborhoods can both change the face of a city and inform
design in a positive way in the development of the "suburbs." This
course will rely on readings, guest lecturers and field trips.
Course requirements: attendance, analysis and comparison of
neighborhoods, required readings and field trips, final examination
