Anthropology | ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE HEBREW BIBLE
E600 | 0372 | Goldberg

The course will include both substantive and methodological discussions of
links between anthropology and the study of the Hebrew Bible. It will
begin by examining classic works of William Robertson Smith and James
Frazer and then trace the reemergence of interest in the topic due to the
writings of Edmund Leach and Mary Douglas in the 1960s. Examples will be
cited from anthropologists who have analyzed biblical texts and from
Biblical scholars who have attended to anthropological approaches.
Attention also will be given to ideological and social factors that have
shaped this tradition of research, and how they illuminate aspects of the
history of anthropology
