weekly. Exams and quizzes given on Fridays during lecture period.
Requirements: Requires Q200 and is restricted to elementary education
majors.
Course description: Q201 is an introduction to the basic principles
and practice of biology designed especially for prospective elementary
teachers. All major areas of biology are considered, with a
concluding emphasis upon the relations between various organisms and
their environment. Students are expected to bring together their
previous experiences with lecture/text and hands-on lab exercises to
develop a sound understanding of the way that the biological world
functions. Specific mention is made of situations they will likely
encounter in their future teaching.
Required Text: Campbell, et al., "Biology: Concepts and Connections”,
fourth edition plus a locally produced lab manual.
Weekly assignments: Completing a section of lab manual; reading two
chapters of text; reading the on-line Q201 lab textbook.
Exams/papers: Four one-hour exams; comprehensive final exam; lecture
quizzes, one lab report, independent project, portfolio of experiments
for children, lab quizzes, weekly lab data sheets and pre-lab.
