An introduction to the civilization of Rome under the Republic and the
early Empire. Using literary, documentary and visual sources, we will
examine public and private life in Rome, considering politics and its
institutions, women and the family, religious customs and public
entertainments, and Romans expression of their own ideals in
literature, the arts, and philosophy. Evaluation based on brief
quizzes and three exams.
