C206 Section 0886 meets from 9:30A-10:45A TR in FA015

C206 Classical Art and Archaeology presents an introduction to the
Greek and Roman World from prehistoric times to the first century A.C.
Class lectures will emphasize how the techniques of modern archaeology
have created a valuable perspective on ancient society. There are
three main areas of concentration: the pre-classical civilizations of
the Aegean (especially Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece), the Greek
polis or "city-state" (emphasis on Archaic and Classical Athens), and
the cities and monuments of ancient Italy (the Etruscans, Augustan
Rome, Pompeii and Herculaneum). Special attention will be given to the
development of Greek and Roman art and architecture, as well as to
issues of trade and contact with other cultures and civilizations in
the ancient Mediterranean. We will also consider the use of art and
archaeology in politics and propaganda (both ancient and modern),
current problems and controversies in classical archaeology, methods
of recovery (such as survey, excavation, and museum study), and issues
of archaeological ethics. Class lectures will be accompanied by slide
and video presentations.
